7 The Hunt Begins
In the anteroom to Oxford's Travel Hall, Kaura found the assembled group ready to go. Only Sen was still missing. George had also come. He had recovered somewhat by now and wore a determined expression on his face. "I must tell Joe's mother personally what has happened," the gray-haired man said simply. "I could never forgive myself otherwise. And maybe Mikhail is still in town, too."
A few minutes later, the Headmaster arrived. He was accompanied by five young men in black robes.
A fleeting smile crossed his lips as he surveyed the assembled group.
"I'm not one for long speeches," he said. "Just this: what we do here is for the sake of magic and the Gifted all over Gaia. You have all volunteered, knowing that we face a dangerous enemy who will stop at nothing. For that, I thank you!"
The five men who apparently were responsible for activating the Portal had already preceded them into the Travel Hall.
A faint blue glow flickered out of the Gothic archway through which Kaura had arrived in Oxford barely three weeks ago.
Led by Sen and two fairies fluttering beside him, the group entered the room where the Portal was already glowing steadily, blue-silver like the sea just after sunset.
The dark-blonde leader of the group, seated in a semicircle next to the portal, turned to Sen.
"The portal is stabilized and we have received the signal feedback, sir. You may pass."
The High Magister of Lockwood nodded his thanks and quickly followed the two guards into the blue mirrored area. Kaura and the other four humans walked right behind. Four more fairies, armed to the teeth, brought up the rear.
In the great Great Travelling Hall of Lockwood House in London, the travelers arrived, single file and flanked by the guards with their multicolored, flickering wings.
Leaning against the column with the golden sphere above it was an old woman of dignified appearance. Her gray hair was tied in a large bun above her head. Her brown-green eyes flashed them a curious glance from beneath bushy eyebrows.
"Hello, Sen!" she greeted the Headmaster. "To what do we owe the unexpected honor of having you visit under such mysterious circumstances?"
With a smile, the man walked up to her and hugged her.
" Straight to the point, as always, Moira! That's what I like about you."
He turned to the small group that had stopped behind him.
"This is Moira Marsfeld, head of our London office. Most of you already know her."
He pointed at Kaura and George.
"These two are friends. They're part of the reason I came."
Moira shook hands with both of them and welcomed each of the remaining members of the group by name. Then she invited them all upstairs to her office, which was generously furnished and had floor-to-ceiling windows that offered a sweeping view of Whitehall Palace and the Thames far below them, and which, Kaura noted with little surprise, seemed to be located on a much higher floor than the building could possibly have.
When Sen had briefly summarized the previous events and explained why they were here, her face became more serious.
